Formation names describe where players line up, not necessarily what they will do. Wide receivers can spread the defense horizontally, tight formations can create crossing traffic, and a back's location can suggest possible runs or protection duties.
See it in context
- A two-by-two spread places two receiving threats on each side and makes the defense declare its leverage.
- A condensed formation reduces receiver splits, creating room outside and natural traffic for crossing routes.
